CDA Competency Standard:
II.4.4b
  • Candidate's facilitation promotes children's physical development.

b) Guides the development of children's fine and gross motor skills

Example (Models movement and motor skills (for example, how to hold a hammer, use scissors, walk on a balance beam, ect.)
Materials:
  • Yellow construction paper
  • Black marker
  • Glue
  • Googly eyes
  • Wax paper
  • Scissors
  • Tape
Procedure:
  1. Introduction: Begin the lesson by discussing bees and their importance in nature. Show pictures of bumble bees and point out their distinctive yellow and black stripes.
  2. Creating the Bee Body: Distribute a strip of yellow construction paper to each child. The strip should be long enough to fit around their wrists. Encourage them to draw black stripes on their strip of yellow paper using the black marker. This will create the bee’s body.
  3. Creating the Bee’s Face: Guide the children in drawing a face on their bee body. They can use the black marker to draw the mouth and eyebrows.
  4. Adding the Eyes: Provide the children with googly eyes. They can use the glue to stick the eyes onto their bee’s face.
  5. Creating the Wings: Distribute wax paper and model for the children or guide hand over hand, in cutting out a pair of wings.
  6. Attaching the Wings: They can then glue the wings onto the sides of their bee body.
  7. Assembling the Wrist Band: Once all the parts are ready, help the children to tape the two ends of the piece of yellow paper together to create a band. Ensure that the band fits comfortably on their wrists.
Discussion:
Once the bees are ready, have a discussion with the children about their bees. Ask them about the process of making the bees and what they learned.
Assessment:
  • Focusing on fine motor skills record drawing, gluing and cutting skills. Compare for growth with prior observations.
Note:  Please provide appropriate supervision to the children in your care when completing all activities. You will need to decide what types of activities are safe for the children in your care.  Appropriate and reasonable caution should be used when providing art and sensory experiences for children.  Toddlers require special caution, only use non-toxic materials, and do not allow toddlers to put things in their mouths that are a choking hazard.

Circle Time Action with Bees

Buzzing Bees

Bees, Bees, Bees, Bees
Buzzing in bushes and buzzing in trees
Buzzing around, wherever they please
There's nothing so sweet
As sweet as a honey bee.
Picture
Do you like to buzz?

Sing to tune of "Do your ears hang low""

Do you like to buzz.
Are you covered all in fuzz?
Do you call a hive a home
In the garden where you roam?
Do you know how to make honey,
Are your stripes a little funny?
Do you like to buzz?
