Fork Bee

Age Group:
Preschool
Objectives:
​Children will:
  • Explore non-traditional ways to paint.
  • Expand their hand eye coordination. 
​CDA Competency Standard:
​II.4.2a
  • Activities and materials encourage children of varying abilities to develop their small muscles.
a) Individual fine motor skills are encouraged through a variety of developmentally appropriate materials and activities
II.7.4b
  • Candidate promotes individual expression and creativity.
​​a) Encourages creative self-expression in children’s activities

Materials:
  • Construction paper (black and white and any other color for background)
  • Yellow paint
  • Fork
  • Glue
  • Scissors
  • Marker
Procedure:
  1. Provide each child with background construction paper, fork and paint.
  2. Show them how to dip the fork in the paint and paint with it on the paper to create an oval.
  3. Allow to dry.
  4. Provide them with white paper and scissors to cut out the wings.
  5. Provide them with black paper to cut out the stripes.
  6. Provide children with pieces and glue to attach onto their bee bodies.
  7. Provide them with markers to draw antennae and feet.
Assessment:
  • Observe and record the children as they create.
  • How did they go about using the different materials?
  • During the activity, did they share any information or ideas about the bees?
  • Did they discuss using forks instead of traditional paint brushes?
Note:  Please provide appropriate supervision to the children in your care when completing all activities. You will need to decide what types of activities are safe for the children in your care.  Appropriate and reasonable caution should be used when providing art and sensory experiences for children.  Toddlers require special caution, only use non-toxic materials, and do not allow toddlers to put things in their mouths that are a choking hazard. ​

As young children’s enthusiasm for investigation and exploration develops, they often become absorbed and concentrate for long periods of time. In addition, they may want to revisit an experience several times while they extend and consolidate their learning. This requires the teacher to be flexible in their approach to the allocation of time. This could be over the course of a day or a week, or even over an extended period, to allow young children to become involved in the long-term exploration of something which particularly interests them. Teachers should offer young children adequate time and space to explore ideas within an enabling environment. You should stand back sufficiently to notice what intrigues, confuses and inspires the young children you are working with, so that any intervention occurs from a closer understanding of children’s creativity.
