Objectives:
  • Student will use fine motor skills to grasp and place small items
  • Student will develop art skills by creating sculptures
  • Student will tell about their artwork to a teacher or peer

CDA Competency Standard:
II.4.2a
  • Activities and materials encourage children of varying abilities to develop their small muscles
o   a) Individual fine motor skills are encouraged through a variety of developmentally appropriate materials and activities

Materials:
  • Different colored playdough
  • beads
  • jewels
  • feathers
  • pipe cleaners
  • straws
  • muffin tin (or other organizer)

Procedure:
  1. Place the different items in the muffin tin in an appropriate area along with the playdough
  2. Encourage the child to create their monster
  3. As they are working, ask them different questions to get them thinking about their work. Some examples are:
  • What makes your monster special?
  • What is his/her name?
  • How do you know if they are a nice monster or a spooky monster?

Assessment:
  • Observe and record the student’s fine motor skills. Were they able to use a pincer grasp to pick up the small items? How much control did they have? What did they have to say about their artwork? Write down any conversations they had and place with photos of the activity.

Glowing Night Lights for Walking in the Dark

Picture
Materials needed:
water bottle, harvest colors of tissue paper,  glue, glow stick, yarn.
(Don’t snap the light until you are ready to go out into the  night.)
Directions:
Have the children tear small pieces
of tissue paper  of many colors. The children can glue the pieces to the water  bottle covering  the outside. Put the glow stick inside the water bottle and put on the cap. Cut  the yarn about 12 inches, and tie the ends to make a circle. Make a loop over the top of the bottle under the lip so the bottle can hang from  the yarn. Children can take it with them trick or treating to be seen in the
dark.
