Musical Hearts Game
Materials:
  • paper
  • scissors
  • contact paper
  • CD player
  • markers
Procedure:
  • Prepare for activity by cutting different colored paper into hearts (each color will be a different gross motor activity).
  • Contact paper these hearts on the ground in a circle.
  • Decide what color correlates with each specific gross motor activity and display this information in an area where children can see while they are playing the game.
  • Turn on music and have students walk around the heart “track” until you stop the music.
  • Whatever color the children land on is the gross motor activity they should do.
  • Stop and start the music several times so that children have the opportunity to land on a variety of colors.
Assessment:
  • Observe and record the children’s gross motor skills. Were they able to balance without falling over? Did they need a couple of tries? Keep anecdotal notes on the children’s progress.

  • Creative Movement

Picture
Creative movement is a joyful way for children to explore movement through music, develop physical skills, channel energy, stimulate imagination and promote creativity. Creative movement uses body actions to: communicate an image (the wind), communicate an idea (a journey) or communicate a feeling (strength). Creative Movement provides children with opportunities for noncompetitive, success-oriented and creative experiences.

Through movement, children learn about their bodies, the space around them, and each other. Creative movement activities should encourage all children to participate.  Creative Movement is a way for children to know themselves and to see connections with the rest of the world. This is a way for them to understand themselves and their relationship with the world.
