CDA Competency Standard:
II.4.2a
  • Activities and materials encourage children of varying abilities to develop their small muscles.
a) Individual fine motor skills are encouraged through a variety of developmentally appropriate materials and activities
II.7.1a
  • Activities and materials encourage children to express themselves through the visual arts.
Art materials and activities are available for children daily
Materials:
  • Paper plate
  • Paint (yellow and black)
  • Construction paper (black and red)
  • White paper
  • Black pipe cleaners
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Paint brush
  • Paint tray
  • Wiggly eyes
Procedure:
  1. Introduction: Begin the lesson by discussing bees and their importance in nature. Show pictures of bumble bees and point out their distinctive yellow and black stripes.
  2. Painting the Bee Body: Distribute a paper plate to each child. Allow the children to paint the entire paper plate yellow using their paint brush and yellow paint from their paint tray. Set aside to dry.
  3. Creating the Bee Stripes: Once the yellow paint is dry, allow the children to paint black stripes on their yellow bee bodies. This will create the bee’s distinctive pattern. Set aside to dry.
  4. Creating the Bee’s Face: While the painted plates are drying, distribute black and red construction paper. Guide the children in cutting out one large circle from the black paper for the head, and a crescent shape from the red paper for the mouth.
  5. Creating the Wings: Distribute white paper and assist the children in cutting out two oval shapes for the wings.
  6. Creating the Antennae: Distribute black pipe cleaners. Show the children how to twist the pipe cleaners into arch shapes to create antennae for their bees.
  7. Assembling the Bee: Once all the parts are ready and the paint is dry, it’s time to assemble the bee. Guide the children in gluing the eyes, mouth, wings, and antennae onto their bee bodies. Allow to dry.
  8. Discussion: Once the bees are dry, have a discussion with the children about their bees. Ask them about the process of making the bees and what they learned.
Assessment:
  • Observe and record cutting skills and picking up and attaching small pieces.
  • Did the children get creative (ie... happy or sad bees, wavy stripes etc.)
Note:  Please provide appropriate supervision to the children in your care when completing all activities. You will need to decide what types of activities are safe for the children in your care.  Appropriate and reasonable caution should be used when providing art and sensory experiences for children.  Toddlers require special caution, only use non-toxic materials, and do not allow toddlers to put things in their mouths that are a choking hazard.
