Pumpkin Soup

Objectives:  

Children will:

• develop sensory motor skill.
• participate in cooperative play with other children.
• practice retelling a story.

Pumpkin Soup

CDA Competency Standard:   

II.6.3a

• Candidate reads to children in a developmentally appropriate manner
  • ​​​a) Reads to children engagingly

Materials: 

• water table
• water bottles with orange colored water
• plastic bowls
• ladle
• pumpkin shaped ice cubes or plastic pumpkins
• pumpkin pie spice
• Pumpkin Soup by Helen Cooper

Procedure: 

• Prepare the sensory bin by adding the materials to the water table
• Read Pumpkin Soup to the children.
  
• As you are reading, be sure to stop periodically and discuss elements of the story including the characters, plot and setting. 
• Encourage the children to make their own pumpkin soup in the sensory bin.
• As they are playing, ask them to retell the story.

Assessment: 

• Record and take anecdotal notes on their ability to retell the story. What elements were they able to remember and explain?  Do not worry if they are not able to retell the entire story. This activity is designed to practice this skill. If they are struggling, go through the pictures in the story with them to refresh their memory. Did the children play with others appropriately?
