Corn Tweezing

Objectives:
Children will:
- develop fine motor skills.
- practice new vocabulary.

Materials:
- Indian corn
- tweezers
- small cup or bowl
Procedure:
- Introduce new corn vocabulary words, such as “kernel,” “husk,” and “silk” using the Indian corn as a model.
- Show the children how to safely use the tweezers to remove the kernels.
- Encourage them to try it on their own.
Extension:
Necklaces can be made from the tweezed corn by soaking the kernels in water for a few hours and stringing with a needle and thread.
Assessment:
- Observe and record the children’s fine motor skills. Were they able to control the tweezers enough to get the kernels out? Did they use any of the new vocabulary words that were introduced at the beginning of the lesson? If so, which ones?
