Encouraging Creativity in School-Age Children
Preschoolers have vivid imaginations, they tend to be very curious and adept at solving problems that arise from their curiosity. Frequently their parents and teachers value and encourage these skills.
When children reach kindergarten, however, they face new challenges such as learning to pay attention at appropriate times. This is an important skill; however, children also need to continue using their creativity. School-age programs can give children many opportunities to explore their interests, investigate their world, and make discoveries. The environment you establish and the ways in which you interact with and respond to children can let them know you value creativity. What you say, how you ask and answer questions, and the ways in which you encourage exploration all nurture children's creativity. Careful listening to what a child has to say and recognizing each child as an individual are crucial. Your enthusiasm for children's efforts and successes will greatly support their creativity. Children will learn that creativity is an important part of life. |
