Placemat Weaving

* Lesson plan objective and assessment can be adapted to use this activity with preschoolers.
Objectives:  
Children will:
  • practice fine motor skills.
  • create seasonal piece of artwork.
  • describe the new art technique used.
Washington Common Core Standard
EALR 1
Washington State K–12 Arts Learning Standard:
EALR 1: The student understands and applies arts knowledge and skills in dance, music, theatre, and visual arts.
  • Component 1.1: Understands and applies arts concepts and vocabulary
Creates and experiences artworks and/or performances in dance, music, theatre, and visual arts using arts concepts and vocabulary.

Materials: 
  • different colored construction paper
  • scissors
  • laminator (if desired)
Procedure: 
  • Begin by showing the children how to create the placemat.
  • First, fold the large piece of construction paper in half and make cuts down the page making sure to stop just before getting to the end. 
  • Open up the page and begin weaving using approximately one inch colored paper strips. 
  • Encourage the children to try the new art process on their own.
  • Be sure to help them if they are struggling. 
  • When they are finished, you can laminate the placemats to keep them from tearing 
Assessment: 
  • Observe and make anecdotal notes concerning the children’s fine motor skills. What did they have to say about the weaving process? What did they share about their finished piece.
