Procedure:
- Read the book Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? during circle time or story time.
- Be sure to point out the author and illustrator and the difference between the two roles when it comes to creating the storybook.
- After the story, ask the children what they see around their classroom.
- It may be a friend, a decoration, or a desk.
- Invite the children to become their own authors and illustrators by completing the Brown Bear, Brown Bear printable.
- The children should write their name twice on the top line, just like the title of the book.
- Next, the children will illustrate what they see, and then write about it on the provided lines.
- If the children are emergent writers, it is appropriate for them to use inventive spelling to sound out the words.
Assessment:
- Assess children's ability to identify the role of author and illustrator
- Assess children's ability to apply phonological awareness to write about their illustration
