Fall Leaves Sensory Bag

* Lesson plan objectives and assessments can be adapted to use this activity with mobile infants and toddlers.
​

Objectives:  
​
Children will:
  • develop sensory motor skill.
  • practice new vocabulary.

CDA Competency Standard:

II.4.3a
  • Activities and materials encourage children to develop their senses
    • a) Sight, sound, smell, taste and touch experiences are encouraged throughout a variety of developmentally appropriate materials and activities

Materials: 
  • Ziploc bag
  • duct tape
  • hair gel
  • food coloring
  • fabric leaves
  • glitter
Procedure: 
  • Create the sensory bag by adding about 2 cups of clear hair gel to the Ziploc bag.
  • Add a few drops of red and yellow food coloring.
  • Close the bag and mix.
  • Add in the fabric leaves and glitter.
  • Tape all sides with duct tape to prevent it from coming open.​
  • Find a comfortable spot for learning and introduce the sensory bag.
  • Talk with the children as they explore, introducing new vocabulary words.  
Caution:  
​
This sensory bag should be provided with supervision. Do not place the bag in a crib, or playpen.  
​Check the back for tears, or leaks each time before allowing the child to touch the bag.  
​Don't allow the child to bite the bag.
Assessment: 
  • Observe and record the children while playing. How did they react to the texture and colors?
  • Did they attempt to make any vocalizations? What were their facial expressions?
  • Take pictures during the activity to place in the children’s portfolio along with your notes.

Pumpkin Hand Art
Hand print art is an easy way to illustrate how children are constantly growing and changing. You can make several different art projects using little hands. 

For this project we used two orange hand prints, and turned them into a pumpkins.
