Feather Beading

Age Group:

Preschool

* Lesson plan objective and assessment can be adapted to use this activity with school-age children.

Objectives:  

Children will:

• practice the fine motor skill of threading beads.
• create a unique piece of artwork.
• tell about their work to a teacher or other children.

CDA Competency Standard:   

II.4.2a

• Activities and materials encourage children of varying abilities to develop their small muscles
  • ​​a) Individual fine motor skills are encouraged through a variety of developmentally appropriate materials and activities
    

Feather Beading

Materials: 

• feathers
• beads

Procedure: 

• Set up materials in an appropriate area.
• Show the children how to tread the beads onto the feather.
• Give the children plenty of time to practice threading.

Assessment: 

• Observe and record the children’s fine motor skills. Are they able to grasp the bead and thread them on the feather? Did they need assistance? Allow children several opportunities to do this activity over the week to monitor growth. What did they have to say about their finished piece? Be sure to record any conversations they have with you or other children during the activity.

Thanksgiving Day Families

When it’s time to eat on Thanksgiving Day,
Everyone is different, they eat their own way.
Some people turkey, some people eat ham,
Some people eat vegetables, some people eat spam.
It doesn’t matter what you eat, or if it’s fancy fare.
The thing that’s most important,  is that ones you love are there.
