* Lesson plan objective and assessment can be adapted to use this activity with toddlers or preschoolers.
Objectives:  
Children will:
  • engage in pre-literacy skills.
  • develop sensory motor skill.
CDA Competency Standard:   
II.6.1b
  • Materials promote early literacy

Flower Footprints
Materials: 
  • In My Flower by Sara Gillingham
  • paint
  • paper
  • paintbrushes
Procedure: 
  • Begin by finding a comfortable spot to read In My Flower with the children.
  • As you are reading, show the children how to hold the book and turn the pages.  
  • When you are finished, create the flower feet memory craft by painting the upper half of their foot.
  • Press it down on the paper, leaving a stamp.
  • Paint in the bottom half of the flower and stem.
  • Allow to dry.
  • Keep the book available for them to read again for the next week or so.
Assessment: 
  • Observe and record the children's pre-literacy skills. Were they engaged in the story with you? Did they return to the book on their own and attempt to turn the pages?
