Pumpkin Reading and Memory Craft

Age Group:
Young Infants
* Lesson plan objectives and assessments can be adapted to use this activity with mobile infants and toddlers
Objectives:  
Children will:
  • develop sensory motor skill.
  • be introduced to pre-literacy skills.
  • be introduced to new language. 
CDA Competency Standard:   
II.6.1b
  • ​Materials promote early literacy
  • b) Developmentally appropriate books are available

Materials: 
  • Where Is Baby's Pumpkin? by Karen Katz 
  • paper
  • paint
  • scissors
  • pen
Procedure: 
  • Find a comfortable place to sit with the children.
  • Read Where Is Baby’s Pumpkin? by Karen Katz with them.
  • When finished, begin the memory craft by painting the children's hand.
  • Press it down on the paper to leave a stamp behind.
  • Wash the children's hands.
  • When dry, cut out the handprint and place onto the front of a card.
  • You can add a stem and vines if desired.
  • On the inside of the card, write “Happy Fall from your little pumpkin!” along with the children’s name and date that you completed the activity.
  • Send the card home to parents for them to enjoy. 
Assessment: 
  •  Observe and record the children’s actions while reading the story. Were they engaged in the book? Did they express interest (i.e. coos, facial expressions, body movements)? Take pictures while reading the story and place in the memory card.

Hand print art is an easy way to illustrate how children are constantly growing and changing. You can make several different art projects using little hands. 

For this project we used two orange hand prints, and turned them into a pumpkins.
