CDA Competency Standard:
II.7.4b
  • Candidate promotes individual expression and creativity
    • b) Facilitates child-directed and process-oriented creative experiences
Materials:
  • Plastic Easter eggs (split in half)
  • paper
  • paint
Procedure:
Set out materials in an appropriate area. Encourage children to come and create. While they are experimenting with the eggs and paint, talk with them about what they are doing. This would be a great time to review the names of the colors or possibly the circle shape.
Assessment:
  • Observe and record how the student uses the egg.  What colors did they choose? Was the child excited to show you their artwork?
Note:  Please provide appropriate supervision to the children in your care when completing all activities. You will need to decide what types of activities are safe for the children in your care.  Appropriate and reasonable caution should be used when providing art and sensory experiences for children.  Toddlers require special caution, only use non-toxic materials, and do not allow toddlers to put things in their mouths that are a choking hazard.

Help Infants and Toddlers Explore Ideas and Symbols

As infants and toddlers investigate physical environments and relationships, they also explore ideas and symbols. Conversations with adults about objects and activities in their daily lives help children come to know the names for things (cat, kitten, ball) and for categories of things (animals, baby animals, toys).

They begin to grasp the rules that govern language (one cat, many cats). In their everyday interactions with adults, they find countless opportunities to explore the nature of nonverbal and verbal communication.
