Caution:
This sensory bag should be provided with supervision. Do not place the bag in a crib, or playpen.
Check the back for tears, or leaks each time before allowing the child to touch the bag. Don't allow the child to bite the bag.

10 Apples Sensory Bag

Materials:

ziplock bag
clear hair gel
10 red pom poms
green and brown foam sheets
hot glue gun
duct tape
Ten Apples Up on Top! by Dr. Seuss

Procedure:

Create the sensory bag by cutting the foam sheets into a trunk and leaves.
Hot glue them together to form a tree.
Place it in the zip-lock bag along with a small amount of hair gel and ten red pom poms to represent apples.
Seal the bag shut and secure the edges with duct tape.
Read Ten Apples Up on Top! with the children.
Be sure to read with an expressive and entertaining voice to keep the children’s attention.
When finished, introduce the sensory bag to the children.
Talk with them while they are playing, practicing conversation skills.

Assessment:

Observe and record the children’s fine motor skills. Were they able to push the “apples” around with their fingers? What verbalizations or words did they make when playing with the sensory bag?

Note: Please provide appropriate supervision to the children in your care when completing all activities. You will need to decide what types of activities are safe for the children in your care. Appropriate and reasonable caution should be used when providing art and sensory experiences for children. Toddlers require special caution, only use non-toxic materials, and do not allow toddlers to put things in their mouths that are a choking hazard.

Apple Tasting

Have an apple taste testing with the children! Choose different types of apples, both red and green. Above we choose Granny Smith, Red Delicious, Golden Delicious, and Gala.

Cut the apples into slices and allow the kids to try each kind. Talk with the children about the different colors, the taste of each apple (sour or sweet?), and which one they liked the most.
