Apple Boats

Toddlers

* Lesson plan objective and assessment can be adapted to use this activity with preschoolers.

Objectives:  

Children will:

• develop sensory motor skill.
• practice new vocabulary words that relate to the activity.

CDA Competency Standard:   

II.6.5a

• Candidate promotes individual expression and creativity

• Candidate promotes children’s vocabulary development
  • a) Intentionally provides opportunities for children to learn new words
    

Apple Boats

Materials: 

• apples (sliced in half)
• wooden skewer
• foam sheets

Procedure: 

• Cut the skewers into approximately 4 inch long pieces
• Cut the foam sheets into small squares
• Make 2 small holes in the foam piece and insert the skewer
• Press the skewer into the apple 
• Place your apple boats in the plastic bin with water
• As the children play with their boats, introduce new vocabulary words such as “water,” “boat,” or “sail,” and practice them with the children​

**Always supervise young children closely around water.

Assessment: 

• Take anecdotal notes on what the children said during the activity. Did they attempt to repeat any of the new vocabulary words that you introduced? If so, which words and how many attempts did they make? Be sure to take pictures during the activity to place in the children’s portfolio along with your notes. 

Note: Please provide appropriate supervision to the children in your care when completing all activities. You will need to decide what types of activities are safe for the children in your care. Appropriate and reasonable caution should be used when providing art and sensory experiences for children. Toddlers require special caution, only use non-toxic materials, and do not allow toddlers to put things in their mouths that are a choking hazard. ​​​
