CDA Competency Standard:
II.7.4a
  • Candidate promotes individual expression and creativity
    • a) Encourages creative self-expression in children’s activities
Materials:
  • sidewalk chalk
  • stick
Procedure:
  • During a nature field trip or walk bring along some sidewalk chalk.
  • When your group comes upon a large tree, or branch, encourage children to use the sidewalk chalk to “paint” the bark of the tree.
  • Support their budding curiosity and self-expression during this activity by encouraging their exploration.
Note: Sidewalk chalk will not harm the trees. In fact, it will wash off during the next good rain. Explain this to children who are concerned.
Assessment:
  • Assess the children’s willingness to participate in the activity and express their creativity.
Please provide appropriate supervision to the children in your care when completing all activities. You will need to decide what types of activities are safe for the children in your care. Appropriate and reasonable caution should be used when providing art and sensory experiences for children.
