Assessment:
Materials:
  • pink paint
  • black ink or black water color
  • white cardstock
  • straw
  • the book Japanese Celebrations: Cherry Blossoms, Lanterns and Stars! By Betty Reynolds
Procedure:
  • Read a book about Japanese Cherry Blossom Festivals such as Japanese Celebrations: Cherry Blossoms, Lanterns and Stars! by Betty Reynolds in an engaging and informative way.
  • Invite children to create their own cherry blossom artwork with the provided materials.
  • Children will place a bubble of ink at the bottom of their piece of cardstock using the straw.
  • Next they will point the bottom of the straw at the blob and blow on the ink causing it to create branches of the tree.
  • Children will continue this process until they have created the branches that they want.
  • After the ink has dried the children will dip their fingertips into the pink paint and dot them onto the branches like cherry blossoms.
  • Last, the children should write their names on their artwork.
  • Observe and record children’s expression and inspiration during the activity.
Note: Please provide appropriate supervision to the children in your care when completing all activities. You will need to decide what types of activities are safe for the children in your care.  Appropriate and reasonable caution should be used when providing art and sensory experiences for children. Infants and toddlers require special precaution, only use non-toxic materials, and do not allow young children to put things in their mouths that are a choking hazard.
