Color Mixing Discovery Bottle

Objectives:  

Children will:

• discover color mixing in a hands-on way.

CDA Competency Standard:   

II.5.1a

• Activities and materials encourage curiosity, exploration and discovery.
  • ​​a) Activities involve developmentally appropriate, hands-on experiences

Color Mixing Discovery Bottle

Materials: 

• clean, clear plastic jar or bottle
• shaving cream
• a few marbles
• colored water in two shades

Procedure: 

• Add shaving cream, a few marbles and colored water to the bottle and secure the lid.
• Give the bottle to the children and encourage them to shake, roll, and swirl the bottle to mix the colors.
• Explain what is happening to the colors in the bottle as the children plays with it.

Assessment: 

• Did the children notice the color changes and realize that the more they shook or rolled the bottle, the more the colors changed?

Scientific Process for Infants

Infants are natural scientists! Yes, you read that correctly. Most people consider science to be an advanced study set which requires higher methods of analyzing, observing and recording. While these things are necessary for scientific study, the very basis of scientific study is in exploration, curiosity and discovery. Infants are constantly exploring, observing, and discovering the world around them! Science is in the very nature of an infant’s development, and is easily supported by encouraging their discoveries and curiosities each and every day.
