Creepy Crawly Sensory Bin

* Lesson plan objective and assessment can be adapted to use this activity with school-age children.

Objectives:  

Children will:

• develop sensory motor skill.
• engage in pretend play with other children.

Creepy Crawly Sensory Bin

CDA Competency Standard:   

II.4.3a

• Activities and materials encourage children to develop their senses
  • ​​a) Sight, sound, smell, taste and touch experiences are encouraged through a variety of developmentally appropriate materials and activities
    

Materials: 

• purple water beads
• toy creatures
• large plastic bin
• scoops

Procedure: 

• Prepare for the activity by creating the sensory bin.
  
• Follow the instructions on the water bead package.
  
• When they are ready, place them along with the creatures and scoops in the large bin. 
• Invite the children to play in the sensory bin

**Always monitor the children to discourage them from eating the water beads.

Assessment: 

• Observe and record the children’s interactions with other children. Were they able to take turns in conversation? Did they demonstrate age-appropriate exchange with them?

Halloween Math Ideas

Estimating: Show children a jar filled with Halloween inspired objects and let them guess how many objects are in the jar. Then have the children help you to count the objects.

Number Writing Practice: Create numbers using candies.

​Patterns: Give children materials to create patterns such as AB patterns.
