Dot Dot Seurat: Discovering Pointillism

Age Group:
Preschool
* Lesson plan objective and assessment can be adapted to use this activity with school-age children.
Dot Dot Seurat: Discovering Pointillism
Dot Dot Seurat: Discovering Pointillism

Objectives:  
Children will:​
  • share information about the famous artist Seurat.
  • be introduced to more advanced art vocabulary.

CDA Competency Standard:   
II.6.5b
Candidate promotes children’s vocabulary development
  • b) Regularly introduces children to more advanced vocabulary

Materials: 
  • Q-tips
  • paint
  • thick paper
  • copies of Seurat and his works 

Resources:
  • Georges Seurat Videos
  • Paint Like Seurat
  • Georges Seurat: French Draftsman and Painter

Procedure: 
  • Introduce Seurat to the children.
  • Give them a short history of his life and give them examples of his work.
  • Explain that Seurat used an art style called pointillism.
  • This is an art technique of using small dots in a pattern to create a larger image.
  • Answer any questions the children have about pointillism.
  • Invite the children to practice pointillism at an art area.
  • When finished, regroup and discuss how the new art technique went. 

Assessment: 
  • Observe and record the children at work. When prompted, were they able to explain the term pointillism? What did they have to say about Seurat and his artwork? Take pictures of the children creating and display the photographs along with their finished pieces in your classroom.
