Hop on Pop Sight Word Jump

Hop on Pop Sight Word Jump

Objectives:  

Children will:

• develop the gross motor skills of jumping and balancing.
• practice common sight words.

CDA Competency Standard:   

II.4.4b

• Candidate’s facilitate promotes children’s physical development
  • ​b) Guides the development of children’s fine and gross motor skills
    

Materials: 

• Hop on Pop by Dr. Seuss (available from Amazon - see below)
• yellow paper
• black marker
• contact paper

Procedure: 

• Prepare for the activity by creating the paper sight or “popcorn” words. 
• Use the contact paper to stick the words to the floor.
• Read Hop on Pop with the children. 
• Encourage the children to practice saying the popcorn words as they jump. 
• You can rotate the different sight words as the weeks progress.

Assessment: 

• Observe and record the children’s gross motor skills. Were they able to jump from sight word to sight word while saying the word orally? What words did they struggle with? Be sure to review these with them.

Using Dr. Seuss for Read-Alouds

Tips for reading aloud from the CDA council:

• Be sure to preview books before reading them to make sure they are appropriate for your students
  
• Mark places to stop and ask questions, make predictions, or make connections
  
• Keep children’s attention by holding eye contact
  
• Remember to speak clearly 
  
• Match the tempo of the book’s story
  
• “Act out” the book using character voices, hand/body movements, and facial expressions
  
• Take a few moments to do a “picture walk” before you read
  
• Extend book-reading experiences with related activities/projects
