Jellyfish Songs and Action Rhymes
Jelly Fish
by Debbie Hasbrook
Jelly fish, jelly fish swimming in the sea,
Floating in the water up where I can see.
I have to be careful, don’t come too near,
Your tentacles might sting, I’m out of here.

Fish Named Jelly
by Debbie Hasbrook
If I was going to be a fish,
I’d be a fish named jelly.
Instead of swimming, I would float,
So everyone could see me.
I’d have no fins, no eyes, no tail,
Just a soft and see through body.
And long tentacles floating down,
To catch the things that feed me.

Jelly Fish, Jellyfish what do you see,
floating around in the big blue sea?
I see an Orca!
Jellyfish, Jellyfish what do you see,

Activity:
Have on hand pictures, toys, or felt representations of all the things living in the sea. You can hold up a picture or have each child hold a picture and place it on the board when it’s called out. After a while let the children shout out from memory, then place the picture on the board.
Extension Ideas:
1. Set out art materials so that children can make a representation of an ocean creature. Next time you do the song, let them use their own creature.
2. Play ocean or whale music and let the children move or dance with their creature. Or, purchase 1yd each of different material that feels or looks like the ocean: aqua, blue, green, shiny, glittery, fish net and see through and let them dance or move. You could also use ribbons to represent sea weed.

Jellyfish Fingerplay
Five little plankton swimming in the sea. Teasing Mr. Jellyfish, "Can't catch me!" Along comes Mr. Jellyfish, quiet as can be. ZAP! Four little plankton swimming in the sea. Continue the rhyme counting down to the last plankton (4 little plankton, 3 little plankton, etc). The last verse would go as follows: One little plankton swimming in the sea. Teasing Mr. Jellyfish, "Can't catch me!" Along comes Mr. Jellyfish, quiet as can be. ZAP! Watch out for jellyfish floating in the sea! |
