* Lesson plan objective and assessment can be adapted to use this activity with school-age children.
Objectives:  
Children will:
  • develop fine motor skills.
  • tell about their artwork.
CDA Competency Standard:   
II.4.2a
  • Activities and materials encourage children of varying abilities to develop their small muscles
    • a) Individual fine motor skills are encouraged through a variety of developmentally appropriate materials and activities

Materials: 
  • light table
  • Mandela flowers printable
  • glass pebbles
  • gems
  • beads
Procedure: 
  • Prepare the light table by placing out all materials
  • Invite children to make their flower
  • As they are creating, ask them open-ended questions about their work. Here are a few examples:
    • Why did you choose those colors?
    • What name would you give your flower?
    • What about creating your art was easy? What was hard? 
Assessment: 
  • Observe and record the children's fine motor skills. How did they do grasping and placing the glass pebbles, gems, and beads? What did they have to say about their work? ​
