“Little Cloud” Painting

Lesson Plan:

“Little Cloud” Painting
Lesson plan developed by Ms. Erika Geelhoed, BA Ed
Age Group:
Preschool
* Lesson plan objectives and assessments can be adapted to use this activity with toddlers, and school-age children.
Objectives:  
Children will:
  • connect literature to the arts.
  • practice fine motor skills.
  • tell about their work.
CDA Competency Standard:   
II.6.3a
  • Candidate reads to children in a developmentally appropriate manner
    • ​​​a) Reads to children engagingly 
Picture
"Little Cloud" Painting
Materials: 
  • shaving cream
  • glue
  • paintbrush or spoon
  • blue construction paper
  • Little Cloud by Eric Carle 
Procedure: 
  • Begin by reading Little Cloud with the children.
  • Stop periodically to discuss the story and ask questions about the text. 
  • Mix equal parts shaving cream and glue to create the cloud paint. 
  • Invite the children to paint their clouds on the blue construction paper. 
  • As the children are creating, you can ask them open-ended questions to encourage them to talk about their work.
  • Here are some examples:
    • What title would you give this piece?
    • What shapes have you seen in the clouds before?
    • ​How were you feeling when you made this picture? Why did you feel that way?
Assessment: 
  • Record what the children had to say. Were they able to tell about their piece? Write down any conversations they had during the activity. You can display the comments and work around the classroom.
