Make It Rain: Sensory Bin

Age Group:
Mobile Infants
* Lesson plan objective and assessment can be adapted to use this activity with toddlers or preschoolers.
Objectives:  
Children will:
  • develop sensory motor skill.
  • develop their sense of hearing by being introduced to new sounds.
  • practice new vocabulary words.
CDA Competency Standard:   
II.4.3a
  • Activities and materials encourage children to develop their senses
    • a) Sight, sound, smell, taste and touch experiences are encouraged through a variety of developmentally appropriate materials and activities

Make it Rain: Sensory Bin

Materials: 
  • water table or large plastic bin
  • water 
  • colander 
  • foam sheets 
  • blue food coloring
Procedure: 
  • Prepare for the activity by creating the sensory bin.
  • Add water to the water table along with a few drops of blue food coloring to change the water color.
  • Cut out several rain drops from the foam sheets and place them in the bin as well. 
  • Place the bin in an appropriate area and introduce the children to it
  • As the children is playing, introduce new vocabulary words to them that relate to the activity​
**Always monitor young children around water.
Assessment: 
  • Observe and record the children’s communication skills. Did they attempt to say any of the new vocabulary words back to you? How did they react to the water sounds? Take pictures of the activity and place them in the children’s portfolio along with your notes. 
Note: Please provide appropriate supervision to the children in your care when completing all activities. You will need to decide what types of activities are safe for the children in your care. Appropriate and reasonable caution should be used when providing art and sensory experiences for children. Infants require special caution, only use non-toxic materials, and do not allow infants to put things in their mouths that are a choking hazard. ​
