Objectives:  

Children will:

• discover math symbols, numbers, and shapes in a hands-on way.

Math Discovery Salt Box

CDA Competency Standard:

II.5.1a

• Activities and materials encourage curiosity, exploration and discovery.
  

a) Activities involve developmentally appropriate, hands-on experiences

Materials: 

• small plastic clear bin
• salt
• paintbrush
• laminated paper with math symbols, numbers, and shapes
• tape

Procedure: 

To prepare materials:

• Draw or print out a page with mathematical symbols on it.
  
• Laminate the page and tape it to the outside bottom of the bin.
  
• Fill the bin with salt and place a paintbrush in it.
• Invite the children to use the paintbrush to sweep the salt away and discover the mathematical symbols.

Assessment: 

Did the children discover the math symbols and recognize any of them? Observe and record any discoveries or new knowledge.
