Memory Match Pancakes

Objectives:  

Children will:

• demonstrate knowledge of high-frequency words by saying them aloud.
• participate in cooperative play with peers.

Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts: 
Reading Standards: Foundational Skills (K–5) Kindergartners: Phonics and Word Recognition
·         3. Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words
o   c. Read common high-frequency words by sight (e.g., the, of, to, you, she, my, is, are, do, does).

Memory Match Pancakes

Materials: 

• Pancakes, Pancakes! by Eric Carle
• spatulas
• thick paper
• scissors
• markers

Procedure: 

• Have the children assist you in making the sight word pancakes using the thick paper and markers.
  
• Be sure to use sight words that the children are currently working on.
  
• You will need 2 of every word. 
• Read Pancakes, Pancakes! with the children.
• Mix up the sight word pancakes and place them face down on the table or carpet. 
• Have the children play the game in which they try to find the match for each sight word. 

Assessment: 

• Observe the children during the activity and record what sight words they were and were not able to recognize within a reasonable time limit.
  
• You can review the sight words they struggled with during small group instruction or one-on-one.

Flipping Pancakes Game!

Here is a fun game that requires practice and mastery, FLIPPING PANCAKES!

Read:  Pancakes for Breakfast by Tomie dePaola. This is a wordless picture book about an old woman trying to make pancakes for breakfast.

Materials needed:

• A brown vinyl place mat (it has the right weight for flipping)
• scissors
• 2 pancake flippers - spatula's (wide)

Directions: Cut out shapes of pancakes large enough to flip. Let the children have plenty of space to do this activity and prepare for giggles.
