Monster Eyes Sensory Bottle

Young Infants
* Lesson plan objective and assessment can be adapted to use this activity with mobile infants or toddlers.
Objectives:  
​Children will:
  • develop sensory motor skills.
  • explore new vocabulary.
CDA Competency Standard:   
II.6.2c
  • Activities promote language development
    • ​​a) Activities provide frequent opportunities for children to listen, talk, and express their ideas effectively

Monster Eyes Sensory Bottle
Materials: 
  • colored rice
  • googley eyes
  • empty bottle

Procedure: 
  • Prepare for the activity by creating the sensory bottle.
  • Put several scoops of colored rice and googley eyes into the empty bottle. 
  • You can dye regular white rice by adding a teaspoon of vinegar and a few drops of food coloring to a cup of rice in a bag.
  • Shake until all the grains are colored.
  • Allow to dry on a pan overnight. 
  • Secure the lid to the sensory bottle. 
  • Introduce the monster sensory bottle. 
  • As they are playing, introduce new vocabulary words that relate to the activity. 
Assessment: 
  • Observe and record the children’s reaction to the sensory bottle. Did they make any movements or sounds? Did they shake the bottle?

Hand print art is an easy way to illustrate how children are constantly growing and changing. You can make several different art projects using little hands. 

For this project we used two orange hand prints, and turned them into a pumpkins.
