Ocean in a Bottle

Age Group:
Young Infants
* Lesson plan objective and assessment can be adapted to use this activity with mobile infants or toddlers.
Objectives:  
Children will:
  • develop their sense of sight by focusing on small items in the bottle.
  • develop communication skills by practicing back-and-forth dialog.
CDA Competency Standard:   
II.6.4b
  • Candidate’s interactions encourage children’s communication skills
    • ​​​b) Interacts with children, listening and responding appropriately

Materials: 
  • clear and clean bottle
  • water
  • blue food coloring
  • oil
  • glitter or sand
  • small shells
  • ocean themed foam pieces or plastic sea creatures
  • glue gun with glue
Procedure: 
  • Fill bottle 2/3 full of water and add 5 drops of blue food coloring.
  • Add as much sand, glitter, shells, and foam pieces as you would like.
  • Cover bottle with lid and gently shake up.
  • Remove lid and add oil almost to the top of the bottle.
  • Apply glue to the inside of the lid and screw onto the bottle tightly.
  • Present the bottle to the children and show them how to turn it on its side and gently rock and forth to create ocean waves.
  • As the children are exploring the bottle, talk with them about what they are experiencing.
  • Practice back-and-forth exchanges with them. 
Assessment: 
  • Record how many exchanges were made between you and the children. Make any anecdotal notes and put all the information in the children’s portfolio.
