Placemat Weaving

practice fine motor skills.
create seasonal piece of artwork.
describe the new art technique used.

Creates and experiences artworks and/or performances in dance, music, theatre, and visual arts using arts concepts and vocabulary.

Placemat Weaving

Materials:

different colored construction paper
scissors
laminator (if desired)

Procedure:

Begin by showing the children how to create the placemat.
First, fold the large piece of construction paper in half and make cuts down the page making sure to stop just before getting to the end.
Open up the page and begin weaving using approximately one inch colored paper strips.
Encourage the children to try the new art process on their own.
Be sure to help them if they are struggling.
When they are finished, you can laminate the placemats to keep them from tearing

Assessment:

Observe and make anecdotal notes concerning the children’s fine motor skills. What did they have to say about the weaving process? What did they share about their finished piece.
