  1. Set up magnification station for students. Provide them with all different types of feathers, magnifying glasses, paper to record their observations on, pencils to write with, and crayons/markers for drawing what they see. 
  2. Ask students why they think birds have feathers. What do they help them do? Are all feathers the same? 
  3. After discussion, have students begin their observation. While they are working, encourage them to use creative words while writing. 
  4. If time allows you can add a few drops of water to the feathers and ask students to observe what is happening. Prompt them to explain why the water rolls off the feathers. Ask them how they think this helps the bird.

Fill large tub with water and rubber ducks. Add a few drops of blue food coloring to turn the water blue. Provide child with spray bottle filled with water. Students will realize that if they squirt the ducks in the water, they move. As the student is playing and discovering, talk with them about what they are experiencing. You can ask open-ended questions like: 

  • How are the ducks moving?
  • What does the water feel like? How about the ducks?
  • How can you get the ducks to move faster?

  1. Prep for sensory play by filling large bin with bird seed, plastic eggs, and sticks.
  2. Set bin on the floor and allow child to play.
  3. Make sure you monitor child to prevent choking. As the child plays, have a conversation with them about what they are experiencing.
  4. Ask them questions and use new vocabulary to describe what is happening.

Fill bottles with water (not quite to the top). Add a few drops of food coloring. Put the stem of the carnation in the colored water. Repeat this for all the colors you desire. Display bottles for students to observe. Set up paper, pencils/crayons, and magnifying glasses around bottles to encourage students to write/draw what they are seeing (these pages can be save to make a book with later). As the days go on and the flowers show more colors in their petals, meet with students and talk about what is happening. 

Ask them questions such as:
  • How do you think the petals are changing colors? 
  • What part of the flower is helping them do that? 
  • What can you notice about how much water is in the bottles? Where is it going? ​

  1. Begin by making sure infant is ready for activity (remove socks, pant legs pushed up, clean feet, etc.). 
  2. Introduce them to new colors in paint bottles. Talk with them about what they are seeing. Conversing with the child during learning makes the information more relevant and meaningful.  
  3. Paint the infant’s right foot and press on pot to make the left wing of the butterfly. Do this again with the left foot to make the right wing. When dry, create the butterfly’s body and antennae using the black marker. 
  4. Finish by spraying pot with sealing spray.

  1. Prepare for lesson by cutting out poster board into petal shapes. 
  2. On appropriate surface, spread out Cool-Whip and add a few drops of desired food coloring. 
  3. Invite the child to come experiment. Show them how to mix the colors using your hands. When child is done creating, lay poster board on top of Cool-Whip mixture. 
  4. Do this for as many petals as you want the flower to have. When dry arrange into correct shape. 
  5. Finish lesson by having a conversation with the child about the project and their work.

  1. Create the flowers that will be used for the math game with students by having them cut out the butcher paper and painting.
  2. When dry mark flowers with the sum you will untimely want for that flower.
  3. Next, start on the leaves. This would be a good time to have a discussion with them about addition pairs and decomposing numbers.
  4. Give them the sum and ask for pairs. Check and question their answers as a class.
  5. Paint them green and when dry write the various pairs on the leaves. Students can then practice their math skills by taping the leaves on the correct sum. ​

Use the craft materials to create flowers of different sizes and colors. Glue onto poster board and let dry. Present to the infant and let them explore. As they are touching the different materials, converse with them about what they are experiencing. You can use new vocabulary words such as “petal”, “stem”, and “leaves” to promote language acquisition. ​
