Turkey Reading and Memory Craft​

Activity:  
Turkey Reading and Memory Craft

Age Group:
Toddlers
* Lesson plan objectives and assessments can be adapted to use this activity with preschoolers.

Objectives:  
  • Child will be introduced to new vocabulary
  • Child will be introduced to pre-literacy skills 

CDA Competency Standard:   
II.6.2a
  • Activities promote language development
    • a) Children are read to every day

Materials: 
​
  • Book:  I Love to Gobble You Up! by Sandra Magsamen
  • Paper
  • Paint
  • Glue
  • Googly eyes

Procedure: 
  1. ​Find a comfortable spot and read I Love to Gobble You Up! with the child
  2. When finished, begin the memory craft by painting the child’s hand and stamping it onto the paper. Clean the child’s hand off. Repeat with 3-4 different colors. These stamps will act as the feathers
  3. Paint the child’s foot using the brown paint and stamp it down onto the paper.
  4. Allow all of the stamps to dry.
  5. Cut out the stamps and glue together to make a turkey.
  6. Glue on googly eyes and a beak. 

Assessment: 
  • Observe and record the child’s actions while reading the story. Were they engaged in the book?
  • Did they express interest (i.e. coos, facial expressions, body movements)? Take pictures while reading the story and place in the memory craft.
