Valentine’s Day Lava Lamp Sensory Bag

Age Group:
Young Infants
* Lesson plan objective and assessment can be adapted to use this activity with mobile infants or toddlers.
Objectives:  
Children will:
  • develop sensory motor skill.
  • develop fine and gross motor skills.
CDA Competency Standard:   
II.4.3a
  • Activities and materials encourage children to develop their senses
    • a) Sight, sound, smell, taste and touch experiences are encouraged through a variety of developmentally appropriate materials and activities

Materials: 
  • ​Ziploc bag
  • baby oil
  • plastic or foam hearts
  • red food coloring
  • duct tape
  • scissors
  • glitter
Procedure: 
  • Create the sensory bag by adding a cup of baby oil to the Ziploc bag.
  • Add in several drops of red food coloring.
  • Add the foam hearts and glitter.
  • Finally, add in a tablespoon of water.
  • Seal with duct tape on all sides.
  • Place the sensory bag in an appropriate area and bring the children over to play.
  • As the children explores, talk with the children about what they are experiencing, giving them new vocabulary.
**Do not leave children unattended during sensory play. Do not allow children to bite the bag. Do not place the sensory bag in the children’s crib.   
Assessment: 
  • Observe and record the children's reaction to the sensory bag. Did they explore it? Did they make any verbalization's?

(Fjordbo, 1995). Moving the head activates vestibular system and carries impulses to other parts of the brain. When we don’t move, we do not take in information. Important for baby to lift head. Blow bubbles for tracking, head movement This is why children love to spin. (As adults, it takes longer to get back to a state of equilibrium because of thicker fluid in ear canals.)
