Watermelon Sculptures

The Washington State K–12 Arts Learning Standard:

EALR 1: The student understands and applies arts knowledge and skills in dance, music, theatre, and visual arts.

Component 1.2: Develops arts skills and techniques

o Applies, experiences, and practices basic arts skills and techniques in dance, music, theatre, and visual arts

Materials:

watermelon pieces of various shapes and sizes
large skewers
toothpicks

Procedure:

Prepare for activity by cutting watermelon into different sized pieces.
Lay out toothpicks and large skewers.
Invite the children to create and build using the items.
As they are designing, ask them questions such as:
- What are you making? Tell me about it.
- How are you keeping it from falling down?
- What will happen if you add ________ to it?

Assessment:

Observe and record the children as they are building. What did they have to say about their artwork? What creative solutions to building did they have?

Arts Ideas: Sculptures

Use cereal boxes, boxes from shipping, tissue boxes, empty toilet paper rolls, bottle caps and corks, empty and clean yogurt containers, and uncooked pasta to make fun sculptures or houses.

You can glue or tape everything together, depending on the comfort level of the child, and paint the sculptures. If you use tape, try to get masking tape, which is easy to remove.
