Washington Common Core Standard:

Measurement and Data 1.M
  • Represent and interpret data
o   4. Organize, represent, and interpret data with up to three categories; ask and answer questions about the total number of data points, how many in each category, and how many more or less are in one category than in another.
Materials:
  • Different types of apples
  • chart paper
  • markers
  • Interpreting Apple Data Checklist
Procedure:
Prepare for activity by cutting each type of apple into small pieces and organizing them into cups. Allow each student to sample all of the categories of apples. When everyone is finished, have students vote on which type was their favorite. Ask students to assist in charting this information on the large chart paper. **This activity is designed for students who have already had experience working with graphs. This should not be an introductory activity to graphing.
  1. Prepare for the activity by creating the sensory bin. Add several cups of dried corn to the empty plastic bin. Add in the plastic letters and scoops. Create and print of the words mats (you will want to use words that you are currently working on that are developmentally appropriate).
  2. Encourage the student to search for the different letters in the corn and place them on top of the letters on the card.
  3. Once they have found all the letters in the word, students should verbally decode/say the word.
Assessment:
  • Assess students on their ability to interpret graph data using the provided checklist

Note:  Please provide appropriate supervision to the children in your care when completing all activities. You will need to decide what types of activities are safe for the children in your care.  Appropriate and reasonable caution should be used when providing art and sensory experiences for children.  Toddlers require special caution, only use non-toxic materials, and do not allow toddlers to put things in their mouths that are a choking hazard.

  • A Recycled Herb Garden

Picture
Engage all your students' senses by building a classroom herb garden. Recycle aluminum cans as planters. Be sure to bore holes in the bottoms of the cans so that water can drain. When you fill the planters with potting soil, teach the students about compost, a natural form of recycling. Plant a range of attractive and aromatic herbs, such as tasty spearmint or feathery dill. Once the edible leaves come in, let students try to identify among the herbs by smell, appearance and taste.
