Leaf Musical Shaker

Leaf Musical Shaker

Age Group:
Young Infants
* Lesson plan objective and assessment can be adapted to use this activity with mobile infants or toddlers.
Objectives:  
Children will:
  • react to music by moving their body and/or changing their facial expressions.
  • express themselves by creating music.
  • develop sensory motor skill.
CDA Competency Standard:   
II.7.2
  • Activities and materials encourage children to dance, move and develop their musical abilities
    • a) Music and dance/movement materials and activities are available for children daily

Materials: 
  • leaves
  • bells
  • fabric leaves
  • hot glue gun
  • empty water bottle
Procedure: 
  • Prepare for the activity by creating the music shaker.
  • Fill the water bottle with leaves, and small bells.
  • Hot glue the lid onto the bottle to prevent the items from coming out.
  • Hot glue the fabric leaves onto the outside of the bottle and allow it to cool.
  • Introduce the music shaker to the children.
  • Allow them to explore the textures of the leaves as well as how to make music until they lose interest.
Assessment: 
  • During the activity, observe and take anecdotal notes on the children’s reaction to the music. Were they able to make music with the instrument? How did they react to the music? Did their facial expressions change? Did they make any vocalizations? Place these notes with accompanying pictures of the activity in the children’s portfolio.
