Mystery Stocking
Mystery Stocking

Objectives:
  • Student will practice predicting
  • Student will practice writing skills
  • Student will develop their sense of touch

CDA Competency Standard:
II.6.2b
  • Activities promote language development
b) Activities advance the development of language acquisition and writing skills

Materials:
  • Large stocking
  • Smaller-sized Christmas item (i.e. bows, candy canes, etc.)
  • Pencils/markers
  • Chart paper

Procedure:
  1. Place the Christmas item into the stocking.
  2. One-by-one, have students reach into the stocking and make a prediction as to what is it. You will need to explain this new vocabulary word to them.
  3. Write out the student’s prediction onto the chart paper.
  4. Encourage the child to write out the word underneath where you wrote it. Assist the child if needed.
  5. After everyone has had a chance predicting and writing, show your students what is in the stocking.
  6. Continue the conversation with students about whether or not their prediction was correct.

Assessment:
  • Observe and record the student’s writing skills. Did they attempt proper letter formation? What letters did the struggle with? Go back and practice these with the child during small group or one-on-one learning time.
