Penguin Footprints

Age Group:
Mobile Infants
* Lesson plan objective and assessment can be adapted to use this activity with toddlers or preschoolers.
Objectives:  
Children will:
  • develop sense of touch.
  • develop new vocabulary.
  • practice pre-literacy skills such as page turning.
CDA Competency Standard:   
II.6.5a
  • Activities promote language development​

Materials: 
  • That’s Not My Penguin by Fiona Watt
  • paint
  • paper
  • googley eyes
  • glue
  • marker
Procedure: 
  • Find a comfortable spot to read That’s Not My Penguin with the children.
  • Show them how to hold the book upright and turn the pages.
  • Encourage them to feel the different textures in the book.
  • Paint the children’s foot and press it down on the paper.
  • Allow to dry.
  • Finish the body using a marker.
  • Add a beak and googley eyes. 
Assessment: 
  • Observe and record the children’s pre-literacy skills. Did they attempt to turn the pages on their own? Or did they need assistance? Did they attempt to say any of the new vocabulary words that were introduced?
