Scenario Series #10

Scenario about Milestones:
​Kara is a month away from being 3 years old. Her teacher has noticed that she still falls down a lot or has trouble with walking in and out of the sandbox area which is a step up and down. 

How would you handle this situation?

Example responses to Scenario:

• I would try to include more stepping activities so that Kara can practice more. If it still seemed to be an issue after trying for a while, I'd talk with my director and the family about anything they've noticed.
• Kara might be struggling because she is carried a lot and still not used to walking. I'd talk with the family about what is happening in the classroom.

Scenario about Milestones:
​Kyle is 4.5 years old. During circle time, each child is given the opportunity to explain what they did the night before or on their weekend. His teacher noticed that oftentimes Kyle says he can't remember what he did. His teacher is concerned that Kyle can't remember but it could be that he just doesn't want to participate.

How would you handle this situation?

Example responses to Scenario:

• I think it could be that Kyle isn't interested in explaining what happened. I would try asking him other questions and see if he is able to retell things in the classroom that happened.
• I would read more stories in the classroom and ask children to retell me what happened. I think this could help in seeing if it's a memory issue or if it's not something he's interested in.
