Scenario about Social Milestones:
James, who is 4 years old, will only play with Tricia throughout the day and no other children.

Are James’s actions developmentally appropriate? Why or why not?

Example responses to Scenario:
  • Sometimes some children are just most comfortable with one more person/kid than another. Maybe the other child could introduce them to other children.
  • Yes, but we should encourage them to play with others.

Scenario about Language Milestones:
Jarrette, who is in second grade, has been using inappropriate language.
Are Jarrette’s actions developmentally appropriate? Why or why not? How would you react to the language?

Example responses to Scenario:
  • He would be at the age where she starts to catch everything he hears around him and wants to repeat it even though it’s not the right thing to so. I would say, "Hey Jarrette, we can’t use those types of words here. That is not appropriate language for children."
  • Yes, actually. At this age children are learning to listen and learn new words. If they are hearing this inappropriate language, he might be restating it. I would simply say "we don't say that" and redirect the conversation.

Comment below how you would handle either of the scenarios.
