Scenario Series #6

Scenario about stress with children:
Alexis is a young infant in your classroom. You have noticed that when the overhead lights are on Alexis does not make eye contact and pushes you away when you try to pick them up.
What would you do in this scenario?

Example responses to Scenario:
  • In this scenario I would try to limit the amount of overhead lights that are on since they bother Alexis. If it was possible I would try to replace the overhead lights with a peaceful lamp since the lights are harsh. I would also reassure her that she is okay with me and that I am taking her to place were the light won’t be bright enough to  bother her sight.
  • I would use different lighting in the classroom.  I would also start talking to the infant before picking them up.

Scenario about stress with children:

Tabby is a new toddler in your classroom. You have noticed that she covers her ears a lot throughout the day. This prevents Tabby from participating in your classroom activities since she is focused on covering her ears.

What would you do in this scenario?

Example responses to Scenario:
  • Take her to an area of the classroom where it's not loud and give her something to do.
  • I would handle this situation by showing Tabby that if she ever feels like it is too loud she can go to the calming spot in the room were she can go and sit for a bit and take a few deep breaths to calm down and that when she is ready she may join. And from there I would try to limit the stressful stimulation which in this cause is the loud noise. Another thing I would do is to sit down with her and ask her how she feels with being in here since she is new. That yes this is a new environment for her and it can be loud during certain times of the day. And encourage her to participate in activities because she is safe in the classroom with me.

Comment below how you would handle either of the scenarios.
