Lumpy, Bumpy and Orange PUMPKINS!

Pumpkin Guts

Materials Needed:
Large pumpkin
Sensory bin

Directions:
Cut the top of the pumpkin off and place the pieces in the sensory bin
Invite the children to play

As they are exploring, talk with them about what they are experiencing
Be sure to use new and interesting vocabulary to describe the different textures

Hammering a Pumpkin

​Materials Needed:
Large pumpkin
Golf tees
Children's hammer


Directions:
Show the child how to use the hammer to pound in the gold tees
Encourage them to try

Pumpkin Painting

​Materials Needed:
Ziplock bag
Orange paint
T
hick white and green paper
Scissors
Duct tape
​
Directions:
Prepare for the activity by cutting the thick paper into a pumpkin-like shape
lace it inside the Ziplock bag along with some orange paint

Seal the bag closed with the duct tape
Introduce the bag to the child and encourage them to paint using their fingers
As they are working, practice new vocabulary words with them that are relevant to the activity
When they are finished, remove the paper and allow to dry
Add some vines to the pumpkin using the green paper

Five Little Pumpkins Song

​Five little pumpkins sitting on a gate
First one said "Oh my, it's getting late!"
Second one said "There are witches in the air"
The third one said "but we don't care!"
The fourth one said "let's run and run and run"
The fifth one said "I'm ready for some fun!"
Ooo ooo went the wind, and out went the light
And the five little pumpkins rolled out of sight

Our Classroom Book


Materials Needed:
Camera
Printer
Paper
Glue stick
Stapler or string
Contact paper or laminating paper

​Directions:
Take a picture of each child in the classroom, and teachers
Print off each picture and add it to a piece of paper
Cover it with contact paper or laminate them
Bind the book together with a stapler or string
Read the book to the children in the classroom
**Note** Each new student should be added to the book within their first week

Create Your Own Police Hat

This is a fun and easy way to make a Police Officer hat.
Print out and color the template (see below).
We colored the template, glued the pieces together and made a band using white paper, and glued the template to the middle of the band.
We then measured the child's heads, and taped the bands so that they fit snugly.

Examine Your Own Fingerprints

To make our fingerprints, we first traced our hands on a piece of white paper.
We then used an ink pad, and made fingerprints on corresponding with the finger outlines.
Once dry, we began our investigation with magnifying glasses.

Firefighter Pal

Materials Needed:
Paper cup
Black paint
Red and black construction paper 
Glue
Two wiggly eyes
Back pen

Directions:
Cut out two ear shapes using the black construction paper
Cut out a tongue shape and draw a black line down the middle
Glue your ear shapes, tongue shape and wiggly eyes to your paper cup
​Once they are dry, use your black paint to paint on spots for your Dalmatian.

Make Your Own Firefighter Hat

We painted a paper plate red, and allowed it to dry.
Once dry, we used an exact-o knife to cut out a ring 3/4 of the way around the inside the plate.
Then folded the center up to create the front of the hat.
We then printed out the shields (seen below), colored them yellow, cut them out, and glued one to the front of out hat.
The others we used to make badges and affixed them with rolled scotch tape.

Police Car Hand Print

Materials Needed:
Scissors
Black paint
Paper
Markers

Directions:
Help the children paint their hand black and make a hand print on a piece of paper.
​Provide art supplies for them to complete their police car.

Pumpkin Soup

Read the book: Pumpkin Soup by Helen Cooper
This beautifully illustrated book is about three animal friends making pumpkin soup the same way, every day, until one wants to switch jobs. The friends disagree and their friendships is put to the test.
Supplies:
  • Water table (if one is not available a roasting pan or plastic tub will work too)
  • Water bottles with orange colored water (red & yellow food coloring added to water)
  • Plastic bowls
  • Ladle
  • Pumpkin shaped ice cubes or plastic pumpkins (usually can find at local dollar store)
  • Pumpkin Pie Spice (optional)
Directions:
Have a group of children work together to use the supplies given to them to make a pumpkin soup.

Creepy Crawly Sensory Bin

Materials Needed:
Purple water beads
Toy creatures
Large plastic bins
Scoops

Directions:
Set up the sensory bin by adding the water beads per the package
Place the creatures and scoops in the bin
Allow the children to play and explore

Ghost Footprints

​Materials Needed:
Boo! book by Leslie Patricelli
Black paper
White paint
Black marker
White chalk

​

Directions:
Read the book with the children
Dip the child's foot in the white paint and press it on the black paper
Add eyes with the black marker when the footprint is dry

I'm A Little Spider

I'm a little spider.
Watch me spin.
If you'll be my dinner,
I'll let you come in.
Then I'll spin a web to hold you tight,
And gobble you up in
One big bite!

Witch Hat Ring Toss

​​Materials Needed:
Party hats
Black paint
Thick poster board
Hot glue

Throwing discs
Masking tape
​
Directions:
Prepare for the activity by creating the witch hat board by painting the board and party hats black
Glue the hats onto the board
Set the board on the ground and use the duct tape to create a line on the ground that the children cannot pass when they are throwing
Allow the children to practice their throwing skills

All Around The Barnyard

All around the barnyard
The aninimals are fast asleep.
Sleeping cows and horses,
Sleeping pigs and sheep.
Here comes to rooster 
To sound his daily alarm.
"Cock-a-doodle-doo!"

Foot Print Piglet

Materials Needed:
Pink paint
Wiggly eyes
Black marker

Directions:
Paint the bottom of the child's foot.
Place it on the paper and add a tail.
Add wiggly eyes and a snout.

Paper Plate Cow

Materials Needed:
Paper plate
Wiggly eyes
Construction paper (yellow, pink, black)
Black paint
Glue
Scissors
Black marker

Directions:
Allow the children to cut out a circle with the pink paper
Allow the children to cut out two horns from the yellow paper
Allow the children to cut out ears from the black paper
Show them how to glue the circle on the plate toward the bottom, the horns and ears on the outside of the plate
Allow them to use the paint to put spots on the cow's face

Materials Needed:
Construction paper (black and white)
Popcorn (popped)
Glue
Googly eyes
Markers/crayons

Directions:
Allow the children to cut the body and head out of the white paper
Allow the children to cut out 4 legs from the black paper
Show the children how to glue the head and legs to the body
Show them how to add their googly eyes and draw a face
Allow them to glue the popcorn on the body and head

Materials Needed:
Ears of corn (several)

Directions: 
Show the children how to pull the husk of the corn away from the cob
As they are trying, introduce new vocabulary words that related to the activity
"Silk", "Kernel", "Husk", and "Stem" are a few

Leaves are falling,

to the ground,
without a sound.

Days are getting shorter.

Leaves
Tape
Paintbrush

Directions:
Allow the children to tape leaves onto a piece of paper
Allow the children to paint all over their leaves and the paper
When the paint has dried, take the leaves off of the paper

I See Leaves

I see leaves,
They're on the ground.

Falling leaves are many colors--
Yellow, green, red, orange and brown.

Directions:
Allow the children to cut out the center of their paper plates
Allow the children to glue the leaves around the paper plate
Tie a bow with the ribbon and attach it to the paper plate
